Let's Talk about Water-Based Lube, Baby...

July 22, 2015 By Kristi

DIY Water-Based Lube with essential oils | VeggieConverter.com

Let's talk about you and ...OK, not me, you and your special friend. 🙂 There are some amazing homemade lube recipes out there that use essential oils. But not so much on the water-based lube, the condom-safe variety.

So, when I finally found a recipe I liked, I added the essential oils to spice it up a notch! (And don't worry, the oils aren't truly OIL, so they won't impact condom safety like a coconut oil base would.)

Why am I using not using some other birth control method you ask? You see, after major surgeries to deliver both of my little babies, I didn't really want to pull the trigger on another to have the tubal ligation.

Even though they could've done the surgery when Goose was born.

This is mainly because I wasn't sure I was done at two. Try not to judge, but I've watched one too many bad Lifetime movies that make me think even if I'm done at two kids, I should really keep the option open to have another baby to save my baby from some horrible disease that requires stem cells.

So, yeah, because my brain is weird, I'm only 99.5% sure I don't want another kid, which is not really sure enough to ask the hubster to get a surgery (however minor) done either.

And, let's face it, those IUD things scare the crap out of me. And, well, boy liquids are kind of gross anyway. So, I'm happy for now. Hah. TMI?

Why homemade?

On with the recipe, right? So, I started out finding this corn starch-based lube recipe. Cornstarch, however, can be difficult to find GMO-free and can be a little tough on your pH, so it's not ideal.

So, after talking with a girlfriend---not THAT kind of girlfriend, the kind that I can discuss lube recipes with, but in a totally platonic way; you have those, right? good 🙂 ---we went with Arrowroot powder instead.

Side note: you'll love that girlfriend, too. She wrote up some great information on WHY you should switch to homemade personal lubricant for you.

And I took a tip from another friend's recipe on which essential oils to use and went with Sensation, Peppermint, and Black Pepper. Hooray for tingly lady bits!

They are all-natural and create a combined cooling and warming sensation that erm, heightens other sensations. So, you know, have fun with that.

By the way, I get my 100% pure Seed-to-Seal guaranteed essential oils RIGHT HERE. You should check them out, you won't be sorry. 🙂

On with the recipe.

Water-Based Lube with Essential Oils

Ingredients

1 cup COLD water
4 teaspoons arrowroot flour or powder (or starch, all of these names are interchangeable)
5 drops peppermint essential oil (I buy my essential oils HERE)
5 drops Sensation essential oil
3 drops black pepper essential oil

You'll also need a small cooking pot, a whisk, a container to store the lube in (I like THESE TUBES) and a small funnel.

Lube ingredients

Method

In a small cooking pot, add the COLD water and arrowroot flour. The water must be cold or the arrowroot will clump up. Mix until combined.

Lube mixed

Slowly bring to a boil on MEDIUM-LOW heat, stirring often.

Once it boils, the liquid will look kind of like gelatin or glue. Remove it from the stove.
Lube done

Pour into your container. I use THESE TUBES. Let cool slightly and add the essential oils directly to the tubes. You'll need 2 tubes for a full recipe, or 1 for a half recipe.  Add more or less essential oils once you've ahem, quality-tested, this amount.

Lube funnel

Store it at room temperature. Putting it in the refrigerator or freezer will allow a skin to form on the lube.

Enjoy!
