We got some blood oranges in our CSA box recently and we hadn't had them for a while. When Mr. Meaty opened one up to snack on, he was reminded how tart they are and that they wouldn't be a kid-friendly snack like the rest of our oranges. So, I decided to lump them in with the rest of our tart citrus---lemons and limes---to make some sort of Citrus-ade. I was thinking of calling it Blood Orange Lemon-Limeade. The big surprise? Instead of the murky mixed citrus color I was expecting, it turned pink! It's so cool because the kids love the look of pink lemonade, but the store-bought variety is full of junk. So now that I've discovered this little secret we can make our own healthy, all natural pink lemonade at home.
I like my lemonade a little tart, so I only added about 1/4 cup of organic sugar. Mr. Meaty thought it needed more, so the recipe calls for 1/4 to 1/2 cup. But the kids liked it just fine in the tart realm. You know your kids and yourselves, so taste test it and adjust accordingly.
All Natural Pink Lemonade
2 blood oranges
1/4 cup to 1/2 cup organic sugar
2 cups ice
2 cups cold water
Juice all of the citrus and pour into pitcher through a strainer.
Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Add ice ad water and serve.
